A Strategic Route to European Residency
A Golden Visa Program That Keeps Family Residency Simple
Elite Golden Visa simplifies and supports the goal of acquiring a Portugal golden visa for families. We understand that relocation can be overwhelming, difficult and frustrating. Our team aims to make the process easier and exciting – turning paperwork into a new beginning.
The Portugal Golden Visa program offers that flexibility without asking for immediate relocation. One person becomes the main applicant and makes the qualifying investment; a spouse, children and other eligible family members may be included through family reunification. This is how family residency occurs through the Portugal golden visa.
For dependent family members, the Golden Visa program keeps one family plan together, while each person receives their own Golden Visa residence permit.
Elite Golden Visa will help you research the investment route of regulated investment funds. Portugal’s current Immigration Law sets a minimum investment of €500,000 in qualifying non-real-estate funds. It must be held for at least five years, and at least 60% of the fund’s value must be invested in Portuguese companies.
The funds are regulated by Portugal’s securities regulator, the Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM). Elite Golden Visa shares a carefully reviewed shortlist but never pushes a particular fund. Your independent financial advisor can help you consider the investment alongside your other financial assets.
What Could This Mean for Your Family?
Elite Golden Visa makes Golden Visa family relocation to Portugal simpler by coordinating the application, paperwork and settling-in support through one friendly point of contact. This means you can:
Stay together: Include eligible family members in your plans.
Build a second base: Live, work and study in Portugal.
Keep life flexible: You don’t have to move full-time.
Travel more easily: Visit other Schengen countries for short stays.
Plan ahead: Create choices for children, parents and future generations.
A valid Portuguese residence permit can allow short visits to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This visa-free travel applies to visits, not the right to live or work across the EU.
AIMA states that Golden Visa holders must spend at least seven days in Portugal during the first year and at least 14 days during each following two-year period.
This light physical presence requirement gives your entire family time to decide what comes next. Children can stay settled at school while you continue working or prepare for a later move. It also means Golden Visa holders can explore Portugal as a family before deciding whether a bigger move feels right.
Which Family Members Can Be Included?
Elite Golden Visa coordinates the application process — from initial consultation to documentation and working alongside independent legal and financial professionals. We are a boutique immigration consultancy and concierge service that supports and guides you through the application process, obtaining residency, and settling into your new life.
Eligible family members may include:
A spouse: With the required marriage documents.
A qualifying partner: With evidence of the relationship.
Dependent children: Including eligible adopted children.
Adult children: Usually unmarried, studying and financially dependent.
Dependent parents: From either side of the family.
Some younger siblings: Where legal guardianship is in place.
Portugal doesn’t use one simple “under 26” rule for adult children either. Age limits, studies, relationship status and financial dependency all matter. If you have a registered partner, shared custody or another family arrangement, an independent immigration lawyer can explain what evidence may be accepted.
Family applications commonly need official documents such as birth and marriage certificates. Portugal also requires criminal-record information from relevant applicants, while children under 16 are exempt from submitting it.
People researching Golden Visa dependents in Portugal, or the Portugal Golden Visa for a spouse and dependents, often worry about separate paperwork for every person. Although eligibility is considered individually, Elite Golden Visa gathers the core documents through one KYC and keeps the family application moving together.

Golden Visa Family Relocation to Portugal
Some families want a flexible Plan B. Others are already imagining school mornings, weekends with grandparents and an ordinary week in Portugal. Elite Golden Visa can offer as much or as little relocation support as you need.
For Portugal residency for families with children, the school calendar may matter just as much as the immigration timeline. Housing, healthcare and the daily school run deserve a place in the residence visa plan too.
Schools and University
Portugal has public, private and international schools. The right fit may depend on your child’s age, language needs, curriculum, and possible university plans.
Portugal provides 12 years of compulsory education from ages six to 18. Attendance at public preschool, primary and secondary schools is free, and Portuguese forms a central part of the public-school curriculum.
International schools may offer a US curriculum, the International Baccalaureate or another national curriculum. Places and admissions dates vary, so it helps to start looking early. Elite Golden Visa can help you build an international schools shortlist around your children’s needs and the area where you hope to live.
For adult children and international students, university plans can also affect Golden Visa eligibility. Elite Golden Visa keeps the family timeline connected while an independent lawyer checks the residency requirement.
You don’t need to understand Portugal’s education system before calling. Local support can help you ask the right questions about applications, travel time and daily family life.
Healthcare for Your Family
A foreign national with legal residence in Portugal can obtain a National Health Service user number. For the SNS to cover costs, the record generally needs valid residency details, a Portuguese tax number and a Portuguese address.
Your family may use public healthcare, private healthcare or both. Elite Golden Visa can connect you with local help for health centers, insurance, specialists or private hospitals, without advising on medical coverage.
Quality of Life
Safety, education, healthcare and a stable environment all matter when choosing a second home. So do the smaller things: a comfortable neighborhood, a manageable school run and a community where your family feels welcome.
Portugal’s life expectancy was 82.5 years, which was 1.4 years above the OECD average.
For many families, global mobility isn’t about moving constantly. It is about knowing you have choices. If you’re still weighing up the country itself, explore more reasons families may choose Portugal.
Tax Residency
A Golden Visa doesn’t automatically make you a Portuguese tax resident. Immigration residency and tax residency are separate.
Portugal’s government states that tax-resident status can arise when someone spends more than 183 days in Portugal within the relevant 12-month period or keeps a home they intend to use as their usual residence. The 183-day test is not the only test.
Tax status may affect income tax and worldwide income. Elite Golden Visa doesn’t provide tax advice, so speak to an independent tax advisor or let us connect you with one before changing your family’s tax position.
Comparing Golden Visa Countries and Investment Programs
It is natural to compare European Golden Visa programs before making such a personal choice. Golden Visa countries don’t share one set of rules: investment options, family inclusion, age limits, time in the country and renewals can all differ.
Even within Europe, one Golden Visa program can look very different from another. The right residency program should make sense for your family’s real life, so look closely at family inclusion rather than the headline alone.
Residency by investment and citizenship by investment are different. An investor residency program may provide legal residence after a qualifying contribution or investment. Citizenship by investment grants nationality directly. Portugal offers residency, not automatic citizenship.
For a family, the most useful comparison is usually about everyday life, not a long list of investment programs.
When comparing investment programs, ask about:
Family members: Can the people closest to us be included?
Time management: How much time must we spend there?
Investment capital: How long must the investment be held?
Account for changes: What happens when our children get older?
Plan ahead: Is support available after the residence cards arrive?
Elite Golden Visa currently coordinates only Portugal’s CMVM-regulated investment-fund route. It doesn’t advise on programs in other countries. You can learn more about Portugal’s investment residence route before deciding whether it suits your family.
Permanent Residence Is Different From Citizenship by Investment
With Portugal’s Golden Visa, you and your family start with temporary residence. Later, you may be able to apply for permanent residence, which lets you make Portugal your long-term home without becoming a Portuguese citizen.
Citizenship goes one step further: it makes you a Portuguese national and lets you apply for a Portuguese passport. Your investment does not buy citizenship, and you will need to apply for it separately.
Portugal’s permanent residence rules allow someone who has held temporary residence for at least five years to apply, provided the other requirements are met. These include basic Portuguese, accommodation and sufficient means of support.
Permanent residency, permanent residency status and citizenship eligibility are separate. The five-year minimum investment hold doesn’t create citizenship eligibility after five years.
Under Portugal’s nationality law in force from May 19, 2026, most nationals from outside the EU and Portuguese-speaking countries become eligible to apply for citizenship after 10 years of legal residence. Language, cultural, civic, security, financial and other legal requirements also apply.
Portugal’s Golden Visa isn’t citizenship by investment, and citizenship is never automatic. Permanent residency is also a later application, not an automatic result of legal residency. Each family member’s position needs to be considered separately as children grow older or circumstances change.

FAQs Families Ask About The Golden Visa Program
Family life doesn’t always fit neatly into an application form, so these answers cover the practical situations that may affect your plans.
Can Different Family Members Move at Different Times?
Yes, in many cases. Your family doesn’t have to relocate as one group or make Portugal its full-time home. Each residence permit holder still needs to meet the relevant stay and renewal conditions.
What Happens if My Child Turns 18 During the Application?
Turning 18 can change the documents and eligibility rules that apply. Tell Elite Golden Visa as early as possible so the independent lawyer can review your child’s studies, relationship status and financial dependency.
What if My Child Finishes University Before Renewal?
A change in studies may affect an adult child’s position as a dependent. It is best to have their circumstances checked before the course ends or the family submits a renewal.
Can We Apply if Family Members Live in Different Countries?
Often, yes. Elite Golden Visa can keep one family plan while coordinating documents from different countries. Certification, criminal-record documents and appointment arrangements may vary depending on where each person lives.
What if the Children’s Parents Are Divorced?
Shared custody doesn’t automatically prevent a family application, but custody orders, parental consent and travel arrangements may need careful attention. The independent lawyer can confirm what’s required before documents are submitted.
Can a New Baby Be Added After We Apply?
Family reunification may allow a baby or another newly eligible relative to be added later. The timing and birth documents should be checked so the new family member can be included correctly.
Do We All Need to Attend Biometric Appointments?
Each applicant may need biometric information recorded for their residence card. The arrangements can differ by age and case, so Elite Golden Visa coordinates the appointments with the independent lawyers.
Can Our Children Stay at Their Current Schools?
Yes. The Golden Visa’s limited physical presence requirement means children don’t usually need to leave their current school immediately. Different rules may affect financially dependent adult children, so their studies should be reviewed separately.
Can Elite Golden Visa Help Us Choose a School or Area?
Yes. Support can continue after the residence cards arrive, with local help around schools, housing, healthcare and settling in. Your family can choose how much concierge support feels useful.
