An EU Golden Visa for US citizens can make Portugal and other European countries a practical travelling option for vacations, family, business or a future move. Let Elite Golden Visa coordinate the whole process.
A Strategic Route to European Residency
There is no single European Union golden visa. Different countries offer their own residency-by-investment programs, with their own specific requirements, documentation needs, investment options and criteria. Elite Golden Visa specializes in Portugal’s qualifying investment-fund route, helping to make the process simpler and quicker.
For Americans, a golden visa allows for longer European stays, a softer landing for retirement, easier client access or a place your children could one day study.
You can prepare for living abroad without moving now. A golden visa provides legal residency in return for a qualifying investment. Unfortunately, it doesn’t give applicants citizenship. That is a separate application process. However, we can help you co-ordinate steps towards your future citizenship application, if that’s what you’re aiming for.
Acquiring the golden visa lets you choose to:
Stay longer than a vacation: An EU residence permit gives your family the option to spend more time in Portugal than a standard tourist visit allows.
Keep your American life: Portugal has flexible location limits, letting you maintain a US career, school calendar and family commitments.
Create a European home base: Use an EU golden visa for summer breaks, retirement planning and business events.
Give your family more choices: Eligible relatives can apply with you, opening possibilities around schools, college, healthcare and future generations.
Americans already have visa-free travel for short Schengen visits, generally up to 90 days of visitation in most 180-day periods. Portuguese residency adds the right to live in Portugal beyond a normal visitor stay, subject to the permit’s conditions. It is important to consider visitation limits if you’re a US citizen planning EU residency.
Portugal is one of several Golden Visa countries in Europe, and it is the one Elite Golden Visa knows in depth. We’ve helped hundreds of families successfully relocate and begin their new life abroad. We coordinate the Portugal Golden Visa for US citizens through qualifying, CMVM-regulated investment funds. This route is a great pick for foreign investors, US citizens and high-net-worth families. We help clear any confusion regarding the process.
The current minimum investment is €500,000 in a qualifying non-real-estate fund with a maturity of at least five years; at least 60% of its value must be invested in Portuguese companies. The investment can direct foreign investment toward Portuguese businesses and economic development.
There is no government list of “approved funds.” After a simple high-net-worth self-certification and consent, Elite Golden Visa shares a curated shortlist without recommending one option. Our CMVM fund guide explains what oversight covers, and what it does not, so you can question each choice properly.
Committing money to a fund in a foreign country deserves US tax review. A foreign fund may create PFIC reporting, while Portuguese accounts might need US disclosures. The IRS gives guidance for American citizens to follow abroad, which can be helpful, but a cross-border CPA or tax attorney should review the structure before money moves.
Elite Golden Visa is a boutique immigration consultancy and concierge. We organize the fund, banking and application steps, while independent, qualified immigration lawyers provide all legal services.
Here is how we help simplify the Golden Visa application process:
1
We discuss who is applying and how Portugal could fit your household.
2
We can work with your CPA, wealth or legal advisors and lawyers before the investment application progresses.
3
Tell us about your travelling needs, source-of-funds and what background documents you’ve already acquired.
4
Consider a neutral shortlist while your advisors assess risk, tax and suitability.
5
We coordinate your NIF, bank account, fund subscription, lawyer and AIMA application.
6
We stay through biometrics, the residence card, renewals and any later relocation.
Applicants should expect criminal-record checks, lawful-source-of-funds evidence and family documents. Requirements may depend on the case. If you need specialised documentation, we’ll help you co-ordinate it alongside your independent advisors.

A Golden Visa for Americans can support more than overseas adventures. It allows you to be versatile with your physical presence and explore your business identity in new areas. It offers successful applicants the option to build a life in Portugal when the time feels right.
Family inclusion: A spouse or partner, children and some dependent relatives may be eligible, with age, study and financial-dependency conditions reviewed individually.
School and college choices: Children can stay in US education, or explore Portuguese public, private and international schools after relocation; university admission has separate rules.
Healthcare planning: Legal residents can register for public healthcare, while private coverage remains available.
Work and opportunity: Living and working in Portugal may help with European clients, a new venture or regional meetings.
Support after the card: We can coordinate schools, medical registrations, hotels and rentals, and help you settle in comfortably.
Portugal’s Golden Visa needs a residency of at least seven days in the first year and 14 days in each following two-year period.
Governments design their own investment program, so investment thresholds, family rules and permitted assets vary. Some European Golden Visa programs use real estate, business investment or other capital routes; Portugal no longer accepts real estate for new Golden Visa applications.
Elite Golden Visa does not coordinate programs in other EU countries. Our Portugal focus gives you a team that understands its banking, fund, legal and relocation criteria.
When deciding, it is important to double-check investment requirements, residence time frames, family eligibility, tax position and how to create a life you would enjoy overseas. Our guide to why Americans choose Portugal teaches you about EU golden visas and the real-life steps you need to take to ensure your own comfort. We’ll help co-ordinate your residence requirements, so that the process goes smoothly.
Portugal offers residency by investment, not citizenship by investment. Legal residence, permanent residency and citizenship are three separate outcomes, unlike citizenship programs designed to confer nationality more directly.
Permanent residence may be available after five years of temporary legal residence if the requirements in force are met. Under Portugal’s current nationality rules, most US citizens are eligible to apply for citizenship after 10 years of legal residence. Citizenship is not automatic, and the five-year investment hold is separate. Learn more about residency on our blog.
US law does not generally require Americans to give up US citizenship after acquiring another nationality, but dual nationals have duties in both countries. The State Department’s guidance explains them clearly.
Elite Golden Visa helps remove the confusion by bringing your investment, application and long-term residency plans together under one coordinated service. We work alongside your independent financial advisors to coordinate any documentation requirements and help you stay clear at each step of the process.
Holding a Golden Visa doesn’t mean you become a Portuguese tax resident or payer. Time in Portugal, a home and other factors can change the position, while Americans generally continue reporting worldwide income to the IRS. Take independent US and Portuguese tax advice before relocation.
These practical questions often come up once an American household begins planning in detail.
The permit does not end US filing obligations. A Portuguese fund or account can create PFIC or foreign-account reporting, so ask a cross-border tax advisor to review it before investing.
Possibly. Age, full-time study and financial dependence will differ and determine eligibility. We advise that you have your personal lawyer and advisors review your child’s circumstances to understand the full requirements and if they meet them.
The permit can allow work in Portugal, but employer, payroll and tax obligations may change. Check with qualified US and Portuguese advisors first.
The investment is made in euros. We coordinate banking and payment timing, keeping track of currency rates, transfer levies, and filing remaining matters for your financial advisor or lawyer.
Yes. You can buy real estate for your own use, but it does not count toward a new Golden Visa application.
